Open points in risk management
Using ISO 31000, companies guard themselves against risks and hope to gain more orders. But it is unclear how to implement this standard.

Harald Wideburg knows how to handle risks. Wideburg is the head of HaWig Group of companies, which supplies industrial plants with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems worldwide. There are many nuclear power plants among them, where securtiy issues are taken very seriously. For example, Wideburg's people must test, whether their pipe supports are earthquake-proof. Even the welder who will later fix these supports must prove his qualification - in addition, HaWig's customers check the seriousness of the organization that has accepted the tests.

It was more difficult for Wideburg, when his customers also required guaranties in other areas, for example, regarding the finance. One large customer wanted to make the subsequent large order only if Wideburg could provide a guarantor. Such who would ensure that the work would continue, if HaWig had financial difficulties. At that time, the company with 70 employees generated most of its revenues only from this one customer. Wideburg had no guarantor, and did not get the order. "The customer prepared the risk balance and came to the conclusion that we, perhaps, overestimated our forces", says Wideburg. That shall not happen again, the head of the group made the decision. His formula consists of three letters and five digits: ISO 31.000. Just as ISO 9001 has become the standard in quality management, the mark for risk management. "This is a signal to show potential customers: Look, we are prepared in an exemplary manner", says Wideburg.

The standard developers are self-confident...
